Elle: 20th Century Girls & Boys Reunited in the 21st Century

20th Century Girl is a coming of age film depicting friendship and love, set in 1999. It starred Kim You Jung (My Demon), Byeon Woo Seok (Lovely Runner), Roh Yoon Seo (Crash Course in Romance) and Park Jung Woo (D.P). It’s available on Netflix globally, and it’s the very film that garner attention from the director and writer of Lovely Runner when they were looking for a leading man who could play a character spanning across the age range of 10s, 20s and 30s.

I’d love for Byeon Woo Seok and Kim You Jung to meet again in a romance drama next time. Together, their visuals and chemistry would most likely pose a threat to the My Demon Couple (Song Kang x Kim You Jung).

In all honesty, the film was lovely and nostalgic, but it wouldn’t have been special if it weren’t for the ending. The ending played a huge part that remain, to this day, the most memorable because it wasn’t happily ever after but a bittersweet, for some, would say it’s sad ending. However, I wouldn’t change the ending because I loved the revelation and Easter egg where Han Hyo Joo, who made a surprising cameo appearance as an adult version of Kim You Jung’s character, watched the video message from her first love. It was an especially poignant scene.
