The Matchmakers Fashion: Shim Jung Woo

Watching Rowoon flaunting various Joseon hanbok in KBS2’s The Matchmakers makes me want to dedicate a fashion post just for him, as he is all sort of gorgeous in different colours of hanbok. Before the drama started, I’ve read about how much this production invested in the accuracy of the hanbok as well. So, without further ado, let’s have a look.

— Episode 1 —

In episode 1, our Jung Woo wore 10 different types of hanbok! First up, we have Jung Woo meeting the King, for he came number one in the exam. He is seen in two different types of hanbok.

Jung Woo stood out too much that the Princess got her eyes on him, and he was forced to marry her! He tried to argue with the elderly, but failed.

So off he goes to be married to the princess in this bright red hanbok.

Regretfully, the Princess died just as they were to be wedded, Jung Woo became a widower.

Note: Jung Woo is seen wearing a white gwanja (two buttons on the side of his head). After becoming the son-in-law, Jung Woo’s hair accessories and attires were upgraded. He now wears a pink jade gwanja, indicating he has ranked up, as part of the Royal family.

After leaving the palace, Jung Woo changed into the hanbok we are most acquainted with and seen in most sageuk. Hanbok with a gat (hat) and gatkeun (beaded string).

At home, Jung Woo wears a slightly darker green hanbok with another type of hat they only wear at home, named dongpagwan. Not sure why they can’t dress more comfortably, i.e., off with the hats, but I think it’s because they aren’t supposed to show their hair knot.

At the end of this episode, Jung Woo was taken to the prison, where he meets the King. Without his gat, we see that Jung Woo also wears two jade-like beads on his forehead, just above his front headband. Now this one is new to me. I’ve never seen this in sageuk dramas before, but Korean Netizens have mentioned this is a correct depiction.
