First Impression: Pretty Proofreader

Follow the success of 5-ji Kara 9-ji Made, Ishihara Satomi has returned to us with a brand new drama named Jimi ni Sugoi! Kouetsu Girl ・ Kouno Etsuko (地味にスゴイ! 校閲ガール・河野悦子), also known as Pretty Proofreader. Yes I know, Japanese and their super looooong drama titles. *Shaking my head* Long winded title aside, I highly recommend girls who love fashion to check it out. The drama is actually an adaptation of novel written by Miyagi Ayako. Hahaha, another novel turn live action drama. I don’t know how close this will be to the original, but the drama so far has been really fun and entertaining to watch.

SYPNOSIS

Kouno Etsuko dreams of becoming LASSY — a fashion magazine editor. She tries out 7 times and is eventually hired by the publishing company. Instead of working at LASSY, she is sent to the proofreading/editing department to work as a proofreader. Chief Nakehara Naoto hires her because he believes she is fitted for the job.

Etsuko reluctantly takes on the job in hope that when the door of opportunity opens for her, she would be able to join LASSY if she stays in the company. Through watching her work as a proofreader, we see a series of events happening around Etsuko. Before Etsuko joins the editing department, the workers there are gloomy-looking and only wear dull coloured clothes, whereas Etsuko is the complete opposite.

IMPRESSION

I believe the show is about watching Etsuko eventually grow into loving what she is doing now, and showing how she brings sunshine and rainbows into the department and brighten everyone up. In exchange, she absorbs and learns important lessons and experiences from her work-mates.

At the moment, there are only 3 episodes aired and it has been an enjoyable watch. Etsuko is persistent in pursuing her dream. I love her ‘Never give up’ positive attitude. I love her for standing up for herself and others, and speaking her mind. Mind you, that is not to say she is rude because she isn’t.

I think one of my favourite scenes is when the guys are showing off their friend bought an Italian car start with an ‘A’, and they commented girls wouldn’t know because they are only interested in fashion and food. Gosh how I love the dumbfounded looks on all the guys’ faces when she yapped away about the car being Alfa Romeo; how it isn’t doing well and is now owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobile, and that only in Japan it is still considered as high-class / premium Italian cars. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. You go, girl!!!

Isn’t she gorgeous in this shot?

From the looks of it, this is a show where the girl is the only main lead; she is both the hero and the heroine. A character that takes control of her own life and makes her own decision. Even if she makes a mistakes, she readily acknowledges it and fixes the problem. It’s definitely a Feel Good show that gives us positive energies. It’s a change, a good one too, especially after completing a historical drama where the heroine’s life and personality is very opposite to Etsuko’s.

Apart from the interesting everyday life of a proofreader, Etsuko’s fashion is something to look out for. She is a fashionista and she dresses herself with pretty clothes from head to toes. I adore some of her hairstyles. As for the clothes, it’s very Japanese—meaning it is very out there and colourful. It may not suit everyone’s taste, but it’s definitely great to look at on-screen because the colourful clothes match Etsuko’s cheery & optimistic personality.
